Book Review: Warriors by George R.R. Martin, Gardner R. Dozois

A wonderful fantasy anthology. I enjoyed The King of Norway story by Cecelia Holland. Always a sucker for a Viking tale! But the real reason I wanted to read this book was George R.R. Martin’s The Mystery Knight.

This story is the third of The Tales of Dunk and Egg which is a series of fantasy novellas by GRRM, set in the world of his A Song of Ice and Fire novels. They relate the adventures of “Dunk” (the future commander of the Kingsguard, Ser Duncan the Tall) and “Egg” (the future king Aegon V Targaryen), some 90 years before the events of the novels.

This was a fantastic story, better than the second, but not quite as good as the first. I enjoyed reading about events leading up to the ASOIAF series. As usual the worldbuilding and strong characters Martin is famous for are here in this novella. I highly recommend this story, and the other two in this series. (The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword). If you are looking for something to read while waiting for more ASOIAF this will definitely do the trick. I have read Martin intends to continue the series, which is to be (re-)published in a series of collections. I hope this is true and we can get to know more about these two wonderful characters.

4/5 Stars
