Book Review: The Eye of the World (The Wheel of Time #1) by Robert Jordan

About the book:

The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again. In the Third Age, an Age of Prophecy, the World and Time themselves hang in the balance. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.

About the Author:

Robert Jordan was the pen name of James Oliver Rigney, Jr., under which he was best known as the author of the bestselling The Wheel of Time fantasy series. Jordan was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He served two tours in Vietnam (from 1968 to 1970) with the United States Army as a helicopter gunner. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with bronze oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star with “V” and bronze oak leaf cluster, and two Vietnamese Gallantry Crosses with palm. After returning from Vietnam he attended The Citadel where he received an undergraduate degree in physics. After graduating he was employed by the United States Navy as a nuclear engineer. He began writing in 1977. He was a history buff and enjoyed hunting, fishing, sailing, poker, chess, pool, and pipe collecting. Robert Jordan died on September 16, 2007, after a courageous battle with the rare blood disease amyloidosis.

I don’t know how or why I have never read any Wheel of Time. I think after all this time it just seemed like such a daunting task, fourteen books. Well I received book one, Eye of the World from a Tor Books sweepstakes, and decided I would finally give it a try. Wow, I should have read this a long, long time ago! What a great story. Awesome characters. The world is just fantastic. Robert Jordan deserves his reputation as the outstanding author he was. The only regret I have with this book is that I did not read it sooner! Now if I can just read the whole series by this time next year. Thanks Tor Books!

  1. It’s high up in my TBR pile, I need to read it soon! Did you know they actually made a low budget pilot movie of it? A friend of mine stumbled upon it by accident, apparently they made a super cheap stage play kind of thing to keep the movie rights form going back to the original owner.

    1. I am reading the second book now, and I am enjoying it as much as this one. I did see that about the TV pilot. I watched it on youtube last night. It was interesting. I wish somebody would do a good movie or series on these books!
